Winston Salem
Winston Salem, the fourth largest city in North
Carolina, is located in Forsyth County in an area known
as the Piedmont Triad. Historic Winston Salem was first
inhabited by Moravian settlers who came to the area from
Savannah in the mid 1700’s. Winston Salem is perhaps
most famous for being the city where Wachovia Bank,
Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, and the large tobacco company,
R.J. Reynolds, all began. Known for its “living museum”
found in Old Salem, the city has a great deal to offer
residents.
A 2006 cost of living survey done by the Mercer Group
indicated that Winston Salem was the least expensive
city in which to reside in the United States, and
several headquarters of major companies are located or
began in Winston Salem NC. Today, much of the economy of
the area revolves around medical research, and Wake
Forest University Baptist Medical Center is one of the
largest employers in the area. A downtown location in
the city was recently designated the Piedmont Triad
Research Park and is a premier biomedical and
information systems technology research facility.
The
schools in the area are excellent and offer an
exceptional public school education to all. There is
also an abundance of private and parochial schools in
the area. For higher education, the area is home to a
number of universities, including Wake Forest
University, Salem College, North Carolina School for the
Arts, and Winston Salem State University.
Often called the “City of the Arts”, Winston Salem was
the first city in the United States to have a council
for the arts, which was founded in 1949. There are
several places to view the arts and enjoy different
cultural happenings. Enjoy performances through the
Piedmont Opera Theatre and the Winston Salem Symphony,
and be sure to check out the art exhibits at Sawtooth
Center for the Visual Arts. The city’s art district is
located at the center of Sixth and Trade Streets and is
known as the hub for the city’s art galleries and
cultural events.
Winston Salem NC also offers several entertaining local
